Exclusive: James Toney signs multi-fight deal with UFC

Posted by Cory Brady on Wednesday, March 3, 2010 at 3:58 pm· 3 Comments

After months of speculation following James Toney making his intentions to fight in the Ultimate Fighting Championship public, one of the greatest boxers of our time is now set to embark on his career in mixed martial arts.

FiveOuncesofPain.com has been informed through sources close to the situation that James Toney has recently been signed to a multi-fight contract with the UFC.

Toney was seen during UFC 108 while attempting to track down UFC President Dana White in hopes of negotiating terms for the boxer to enter the UFC, although more recent comments from Toney made it appear as though the deal, if any, was dead in the water before today.

“Lights Out” is a former professional middleweight, super-middleweight, and cruiserweight boxing champion, while currently being listed as the active NABO and IBA heavyweight title holder.

Toney’s decorated professional boxing record currently stands at 72 victories and only 6 defeats, with 3 draws and 2 no-contests. James has stopped 44 of his 72 victims via knockout for an impressive 61% knockout ratio.

There is no news currently available as to when Toney will be making his debut for the promotion. Stay tuned to 5 Oz. as we keep you up to date on this developing story.

Rampage's former trainer Juanito Ibarra will be the guy in charge of transitioning Toney to MMA.

I cannot wait to hear who his first opponent will be. I bet they hashed out the contract by Dana paying him a lot for his first fight but if he loses he takes a huge paycut and Toney being so cocky is thinking i'm not going to lose so i'll take that deal. Now he's going to get a tough opponent that's going to embarrass him and Dana is going to laugh his ass off cause he makes a boxer look like a fool. Expect a decent stand up fighter with great BJJ to face him. I'd say Nog but Dana wouldn't want someone like that losing to a boxer unless he guaranteed Dana he'd sub him quickly and not box with him.

What about someone like Cheick Kongo? While he's primarily a striker he does Muay Thai which could confuse Toney who's used to only fighting with his hands and doesn't know how to deal with the clinch game. Plus Kongo isn't in the title picture right now so even if he loses it's not like it damages the status of one of UFC's top HW fighters.

dana is not stupid and he knows tony will sell so im sure his first fight will be some like yvel or buentello like punisher mentioned so that he can win and it should be exciting.

Tony has always been one of my favorite boxers so win or lose im actually really excited about this.

Not by burying the first name boxer to sign with the UFC that just wouldn't be good business

Holy crap, if Kimbo beats Mitrione i think this is a very real possibility because that's a ratings fight beyond anything and it will show in PPV numbers and if both guys are coming in without a loss it's even bigger.

Toney against Kongo would be interesting as hell. What about Cro Cop? The kicks vs. Toney's punches? If Toney lands solid Mirko's done, but if Mirko lands a solid kick Toney will be put out to sleep in the pastures which has never happened to him.

I think Cro Cop could be a possibility. Dana would be dumb to give him a wrestler or BJJ guy in his first fight. He needs to see how the PPV numbers do before deciding if he wants to bury Toney or not.

Also you see a lot of the MMA sites calling Dana a hypocrit and the like because of the "freak show" comparisons. But remember something, Toney approached Dana... not the other way around and ever since their meeting he has been challenging Dana in comments.
